Choosing Materials for your Bathroom Makeover

It is easy to feel overwhelmed walking through a fancy showroom or home improvement store when searching for the right materials for your bathroom remodel.  You have so many options in color, sizes, textures and of course price.  Today more than ever, manufacturers have great looking materials designed to meet different budget points.

Materials Don't Have to Be Expensive
If your ideal bathroom has marble or granite tiles, try going with a ceramic tile look-a-like if you have a tight budget.  Maybe you are looking into glass block for a wall or look-through in your bathroom.  Have you looked into acrylic versions?  They are less expensive and actually more durable.  If you are looking at brushed platinum for your faucets, you can substitute with a brushed nickel to achieve the same look.

You have such a variety of options to go with when buying faucets, flooring, countertops and cabinets.  The variety of styles, materials and price has never been greater.  The good thing is the fixtures, fittings and other elements are more geared for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to change the look of their bathroom without hiring a contractor.

Sinks
As your bathroom fixture will get the most use in the room, a sink may deserve the more care and planning.  It must serve your needs, fit your design style and have a color that will please the eye for years to come.  If you don't have an endless budget, as most of us don't, you can make a simple decision when buying a sink to go with white.  It is much cheaper to get an ageless sink and replace your paint or wall paper and towels than fixtures and a sink.  White goes with everything and is usually the cheapest option.  When you buy a new sink, consider how it is mounted, the material it is made from and the size of the bowl.  After, you can then chose the color and style and that price point.  Bathroom sinks are categorized by how they are mounted (drop-in, under-counter, above-counter, integral, wall mount and pedestal.

Flooring
You can't debate it, your bathroom floor gets a lot of traffic.  It is also an area that can get dirty very easily and cleaning must be considered when selecting a material for your floor.  The last thing to consider is how often your bathroom floor gets wet.  You need to select materials that can handle the water and offers easy clean-up.   Your installation must be good enough to prevent water from reaching your subfloor and causing any damage.  It is easy to pick a floor for looks but durability needs to be considered first.  We recommend choosing a vinyl, ceramic tile or laminate flooring.  Colors and patterns can be chosen after you find the right material.
